If you’re facing loan rejections because of the same reason, then you should correct your CIBIL report first. But that raises an important question: how to rectify CIBIL report and make your credit score error-free?
Don’t worry! In this blog, we’ll cover the different types of inaccuracies that can appear in a CIBIL report, what they mean, and most importantly, the step-by-step process to correct them. So, let’s begin with a basic understanding of the credit report and its importance.
What is CIBIL report, and why is it so important?
A CIBIL report is a detailed breakdown of an individual’s credit history, prepared by the credit bureau TransUnion CIBIL, based on the credit data collected from banks and other financial institutions across India. This report contains a comprehensive record of every credit facility availed by an individual, including their repayment history and current credit activities, such as the status of loan accounts, recent credit inquiries, and other related information.
By summarising this credit information, TransUnion CIBIL evaluates a unique credit score for each borrower, commonly known as the CIBIL score. This score is a 3-digit numerical representation of the entire credit report, ranging from 300 to 900. A high CIBIL score, typically above 750, is considered good, as it indicates responsible credit behaviour and makes you a potential borrower for loans.
On the basis of your credit report, bank managers decide whether they approve your loan application or not, and if yes, then what would be the interest rate and loan terms. Moreover, your CIBIL report determines your creditworthiness and significantly impacts the credit underwriting process.
That’s why to secure an easy loan approval, your CIBIL report should be accurate, up-to-date and error-free. But do you know how errors get incorporated into an individual’s CIBIL report? Let’s explain briefly.
How do errors get incorporated in CIBIL report?
As a borrower, when you avail of a loan or any other credit facility, the respective lender reports the loan account details and your repayment history to all credit information companies, including TransUnion CIBIL. If you have multiple credit facilities from different lenders, each of them similarly updates your credit information to your CIBIL report.
Now, imagine all lending institutions across India are regularly updating the credit data in the CIBIL database for millions of Indian citizens; simultaneously, TransUnion CIBIL also maintains a vast amount of customer data. During the processes of data submission and aggregation, sometimes errors are incorporated, which can be reflected in your CIBIL report.
Additionally, errors can also occur due to outdated data in your credit report, especially when the respective lender fails to update the loan status properly. These issues usually arise because of the negligence of the lender or interdepartmental miscommunication within the lending institution.
Apart from these, delinquencies may appear in the CIBIL report due to non-payments. While this is not technically an error, it happens due to the borrower’s fault. In such cases, you need to clear the pending dues and update your CIBIL report to avoid further negative impacts on your CIBIL score.
Types of errors in CIBIL report:
1. Data mixing error/ ownership error:
Nowadays, many borrowers are facing unexpected loan rejections due to such kind of errors in their CIBIL report. In these cases, you may find someone else’s delinquent loan accounts, unauthorised credit inquiries, and incorrect identification details mistakenly reported in your CIBIL report.
This typically happens when your name, date of birth, address, and other identification details are similar to those of another borrower. Due to these similarities, the credit information of both customers overlaps.
However, the problem arises when the other person is a loan defaulter. Because of these unknown default loan accounts, your creditworthiness is affected, and you end up being penalised for someone else’s mistake.
The good news is that you can easily remove these incorrect details from your CIBIL report. All you need to do is raise a dispute with CIBIL, providing your KYC details. Once the details are verified, the incorrect information will be suppressed from your CIBIL report.
2. Inaccurate outstanding Balance or Amount Overdue
When you fail to pay your loan EMIs or credit card bills on time, the pending dues along with late payment charges can be reported as overdue in your CIBIL report. However, an error occurs when the overdue status continues to appear in your CIBIL report even after you’ve cleared the dues.
According to the RBI’s new Credit Information Company (CIC) reporting guidelines, credit institutions now update consumer data twice a month (fortnightly). This means that when you pay your loan EMIs or make any due payment, it can take an average of 30 days for the data to be updated in your CIBIL report. However, if you notice that the “Date Reported” (the date when the loan was updated in CIBIL) is more than two months old, then obviously it’s an error.
An overdue in your CIBIL report directly impacts your credit score. Additionally, an incorrect higher loan outstanding suggests that you have more debt than you actually do, which is viewed negatively and can affect your chances of loan approval. Therefore, raise a dispute with CIBIL along with the payment proof to get it corrected immediately.
3. Incorrect status of the loan account:
In some cases, you may notice that your closed loan accounts are still marked as “Active” even after paying the loan closure amount. This is especially common if the loan account was previously classified as an NPA (e.g., written-off, suit filed, or settled). If the status is not properly updated after repayment, these negative remarks can continue to adversely impact your CIBIL score.
To resolve this, raise a concern with the CIBIL authorities and provide the No Dues Certificate. Request them to update the loan status correctly in your credit report.
4. Incorrect Days Past Due (DPDs):
Days Past Due (DPD) indicates the number of days by which a loan payment has been delayed in a particular month. For on-time payments, the DPD should be reported as ‘STD’ or ‘000’. However, in some cases, DPDs are incorrectly reported by the lender, even when the customer has made timely payments. These errors may result from administrative mistakes or some technical issues from the lender end.
To correct such inaccurate DPDs, you should file a complaint with CIBIL, providing the loan account statement as evidence, so that they can be rectified accordingly.
5. Duplicate loan account entry:
In rare cases, you may notice that your loan or credit card account has been reported multiple times in your CIBIL report. This duplicate reporting can inflate your overall debt burden and negatively impact your credit score. However, you can resolve this issue easily by raising an online dispute with CIBIL.
6. Inaccurate credit limit assignment:
Your credit limit represents the maximum amount you can spend on your existing credit card. In few cases, customers request an increase in their credit limit based on their spending needs. However, lenders sometimes fail to update the revised credit limit in the credit report.
As a result, when the customer starts spending according to the new limit, it may appear as over-leverage or high credit utilization, both of which can negatively impact the credit score.
If you have credit cards, make sure that all your credit limits and balances are correctly reflected in your CIBIL report. If you notice any errors, address them promptly to avoid any negative impact on your credit score.
7. Incorrect Personal Details
When you take a loan from a credit institution, they update your loan account along with the KYC details you submitted. CIBIL collects this information from various credit institutions to create a complete profile of the borrower. However, due to typographical errors, you may notice misspelt names, incorrect date of birth, wrong identification details, or inaccurate mobile numbers in your CIBIL report.
To correct these details, you should contact the respective lender that reported the incorrect information to CIBIL. Provide accurate information and request them to update their records and resubmit them to the CIBIL database. Additionally, whenever your personal details change or are updated, you should inform your bank or financial institution so they can keep your KYC details up-to-date in your CIBIL report.
